  If I can stop one heart from breaking,
   I shall not live in vain;
   If I can ease one life the aching,
   Or cool one pain,
   Or help one fainting robin
   Unto his nest again,
   I shall not live in vain.

   假如我能使一颗心免于破碎
   我便没有白活一场
   假如我能消除一个人的痛苦
   或者平息一个人的悲伤
   或者帮助一只昏迷的知更鸟
   重新回到它的巢中
   我便没有虚度此生
（这首诗是我最喜欢狄金森的诗之一，另一首是我从未到见过荒原）
